Twilight Sonnet

I am not a poet, but I do write poems for class, when I have to.

Now that the sun has retreated beneath the horizon
The true nature of humanity comes into play
Attuned are those animal instincts we seldom rely on
Shed are the well-ordered constraints of day

Hear the sounds of the dusk echo all around you
The crickets are playing a concerto on strings
Enjoy if you will, but donít let it distract you
For the nighttime is filled with some terrible things

If you should find yourself suddenly feeling the cold
As you travel on your way throughout this dark night
It may be the hopeless terror within your own soul
Because these shadows we see are the absence of all light

Only in this moonlight hour when we cease to pretend
May the darkness without match the darkness within
